The Apollo name comes from America’s golden age of playing cards—originally issued as Apollo No. 33 by the National Card Company of Indianapolis in the late 1800s. The signature Clover Back (four-leaf clover pattern) became one of the most recognizable vintage American back designs.
The Apollo Story (Short History)
National Card Co. was formed around 1886 by inventor and engineer Samuel J. Murray. After working with (and competing against) Russell & Morgan, Murray built National into a serious rival—introducing brands like Steamboats, Crescent, Apollo, and Rambler. National later merged into the emerging USPCC consolidation in 1894, and many National brands continued under the USPCC umbrella into the 1900s.
