KEM changed the world of card games in 1935. While most cards at the time were made from paper, Joseph Kenney’s revolutionary invention of cellulose acetate cards—branded KEM—offered nearly magical advantages: true flexibility, waterproof resilience, and an unmatched “snap” and tactile glide. KEM cards were quickly adopted by America’s bridge clubs, private gaming rooms, and casino tables. The Arrow back design became an enduring symbol—sleek, geometric, instantly recognizable across club tournaments and major hotel card rooms for nearly a century.
Throughout the 20th century, KEM Arrow was a fixture at bridge and high-stakes games, outlasting paper decks with their unique ability to return to shape after bending or shuffling. KEM’s cards were so robust and clear that they became the standard for casino play, earning respect among pros as well as host clubs on both coasts. Following its acquisition by USPCC in 2004, KEM continued to evolve, but always preserved its distinctive acetate formula—a heritage unmatched in the card world.
