About the Spades Game (How to Play + History)
How to play Spades (quick overview): Spades is usually played with 4 players in partnerships using a standard 52-card deck. Before each hand, each player (or partnership) bids how many tricks they expect to take. During play, players must follow suit if possible, and spades are always trump. If you meet your bid, you score; if you fall short, you take a penalty. Many groups also play popular options like Nil (bidding zero tricks for a bonus), and “bags” (overtricks) for long-term strategy. For complete instructions on bidding, Nil, breaking spades, trick-taking, overtricks, and scoring, see How to Play Spades.
Spades history: Spades is widely described as an American game developed in the late 1930s (often traced to the Midwest / Cincinnati area). It’s part of the broader Whist / auction-whist trick-taking family and gained broader popularity in the U.S. during the mid-20th century.
