About the Hearts Game (How to Play + History)
How to play Hearts (quick overview): Hearts is usually played with 4 players using a standard 52-card deck. Each hand begins with a pass (commonly 3 cards left, right, across, then “hold”). Players then play tricks with no trump, following suit when possible. The goal is to finish with the lowest score by avoiding penalty cards—typically each Heart is 1 point and the Queen of Spades is 13 points. For complete instructions on passing, the 2 of Clubs opening lead, breaking hearts, the Queen of Spades, shooting the moon, and scoring, see How to Play Hearts.
Hearts history: Hearts was first recorded in the United States in the 1880s and is commonly linked to earlier European avoid-tricks games such as Reversis. The modern U.S. style that adds the Queen of Spades as a major penalty card developed in the early 1900s, and “shooting the moon” became a well-known feature later as the game evolved.
