How to Choose Poker Playing Cards

Paper or Plastic Cards for Poker?

Paper and plastic-coated playing cards offer the familiar feel, flexibility, and handling most players associate with traditional poker cards. Popular choices include decks from Bicycle, Bee, and Maverick.

100% plastic playing cards generally last longer and resist moisture, bending, and wear better than paper decks. They are especially useful for frequent poker nights and players who prefer a firmer, more durable card. Browse our full Plastic Playing Cards collection, including options from Copag and KEM.

Poker Size vs. Bridge Size

Standard poker-size playing cards measure approximately 2.5 × 3.5 inches and are the traditional choice for poker. Bridge-size cards are slightly narrower at approximately 2.25 × 3.5 inches. Either size can be used for poker, although poker size is the more traditional format.

If you prefer a narrower deck, shop Bridge Size Playing Cards or read our Bridge vs. Poker Size Playing Cards Guide.

Standard Index or Jumbo Index?

Standard index cards use traditional-sized corner numbers and suit symbols. Jumbo index cards use larger markings that can be easier to read across the table. Both work well for poker, so the choice usually comes down to personal preference and visibility.

Poker Playing Cards FAQ

What are the best playing cards for poker?

The best poker cards depend on how and how often you play. Paper and plastic-coated decks provide a traditional feel and are easy to replace, while 100% plastic decks offer greater durability for frequent games.

Are plastic playing cards better for poker?

Plastic cards can be a better choice for frequent poker games because they generally resist moisture, bending, and wear better than paper cards. Many players still prefer paper cards for their traditional feel and handling.

Should poker cards be poker size?

Poker-size cards are the traditional format and measure approximately 2.5 × 3.5 inches. Bridge-size cards are slightly narrower and can also be used for poker if players prefer them.

Is standard index or jumbo index better for poker?

Both work well. Standard index provides the classic playing-card appearance, while jumbo index uses larger corner markings that can be easier to read across the table.

How many decks should I have for a poker night?

A single table can be played with one deck, but keeping several decks available makes it easy to rotate cards during longer games. Clubs, leagues, and multi-table games may benefit from buying half bricks or full bricks.
